Types of Discord Servers: A Quick Guide

Updated: 5 days ago

Discord servers come in many types, each serving different communities and serving a unique purpose, making Discord a diverse and dynamic platform.

Community servers are around shared topics like gaming, tech, and anime all at once. Gaming servers focus on specific games, while private servers are small, invite-only spaces for friends. Content creator servers connect influencers with fans, and educational servers support learning. Tech servers serve developers, while business servers focus on networking.

Roleplay servers enable storytelling, NSFW servers are 18+, and support servers offer safe discussion spaces. Music and entertainment servers host events, while marketplace servers facilitate buying and selling digital goods.

Membership size is important.

The number of members in a Discord server can influence its ability to attract new members. Larger servers often appear more active and popular, making them more appealing to people seeking vibrant, engaged communities. High member counts can create a sense of credibility and activity, making newcomers more likely to join.

In contrast, smaller servers may offer a more personal, close-knit atmosphere, but they might face challenges in attracting new members if they lack visibility or activity. Ultimately, a server’s growth depends on its member engagement and its discovery ability.

Gaining more members

Growing a small Discord server can be challenging because it lacks the visibility and activity that larger servers naturally attract. Without an existing active community, new members may hesitate to join or stay engaged. Smaller servers often struggle with promotion, since fewer people to spread the word.

To easily gain more members for your Discord server, it's best to focus on focus on visibility, engagement, and value. Promote your server on social media, Discord listing sites, and relevant online communities. Keep your server active with engaging discussions, events, and interactive bots to encourage participation. Offer unique value, such as exclusive content, helpful resources, or a welcoming atmosphere. Consistently interacting with members and maintaining a well-organized server will help attract and retain new users.

Consistency is key to growing a Discord server. Even if growth is slow, staying active and engaging with members will pay off. Many successful servers started small but grew through persistence and adaptation. Patience and dedication turn small communities into thriving ones.

The server theme does count

There are a lot of themes and I've tried my best to summarise them as best as possible for you so you could find your ideal server theme in them. With server theme I do not mean Harry Potter Fandom or Genshin Impact Gaming server, but the general themes there are in servers.

We want Discord to be a safe platform for everyone. But a blog about Discord can't be a good blog without its own server. In this server, you can help to get news on the server, make sure that the news is spread around to other server and even help us built a safe community to everyone.

We always post 2 to 4 blog posts weekly, giving you a report of a raid that happened, new info about a past raid, analysing changes happening around Discord, addressing the problem Discord has or causes (if there are) and much more imaginable.

If you have any info for us or would like to contribute on a post, send it to us in the Platform Journey Discord Server. The more info you have, the better we can inform everyone or even do a slight investigation behind it.
