Giveaway Controversy: When Promotions Turn into Scams

Updated: 5 days ago

Many Discord servers today are well-known for hosting giveaways, often offering prizes such as Discord Nitro, exclusive server perks, video games, gift cards, or even real money. These giveaways serve as a powerful tool to attract new members, as people are naturally drawn to the idea of receiving free rewards, especially when they hold monetary value.

Since giveaways create excitement and engagement, they are frequently used by server owners to boost their community size and activity. However, while many giveaways are legitimate, some exploit this attraction by using misleading tactics to gain members or manipulate engagement without ever delivering on their promises.

The abuse of giveaways

Over the years, giveaways have become increasingly popular among Discord servers as a quick and effective way to gain new members. For example, if you host a Nitro giveaway and allow members a week to participate, they may share it with their friends, encouraging them to join the server and increasing your member count. This makes giveaways one of the easiest and most efficient methods to attract new users and boost server activity.

However, this strategy can also be misused. After observing giveaways across various servers, I have identified five ways in which hosts or server owners have abused their giveaway privileges:

1. Fake or Rigged Giveaways

Some giveaway hosts pick friends or alternate accounts as winners, ensuring that real participants never get a fair chance. Others run fake giveaways where no prize is ever awarded, or they change the rules midway to disqualify users and avoid giving away rewards.

2. Botting & Multi-Accounting

To increase their chances unfairly, some users create multiple accounts or use bots to enter giveaways. Others join servers solely for the giveaway, only to leave immediately after winning, which hurts genuine community engagement.

3. Engagement Farming

Many servers use giveaways to artificially boost engagement by requiring participants to react to messages, invite others, or boost the server. While this helps server growth, it often results in people joining just for rewards rather than meaningful interaction.

4. Scams & Phishing

Some fake giveaways trick winners into clicking malicious links, leading to account theft. Others ask for personal information, such as PayPal or crypto wallet details, under the guise of sending the prize. Some scammers even run “pay-to-enter” giveaways where users must pay a fee to participate, only for the host to disappear without awarding anything.

5. Unfair Last-Minute Changes

Hosts sometimes cancel giveaways due to "low participation," extend deadlines indefinitely, or add new conditions that make it difficult for winners to claim their prize. In some cases, even after a winner is chosen, they are asked to complete extra tasks before receiving their reward.

How to Avoid Giveaway Abuse

To avoid falling victim to giveaway abuse, participants should always ensure they are entering contests hosted by trusted and reputable servers or individuals. It is important to check whether past winners have received their prizes, as this can be a strong indicator of whether the host runs fair giveaways.

Additionally, users should be cautious of giveaways that request excessive personal information, require upfront payments, or direct them to suspicious external links. Using Discord giveaway bots with verified fair selection methods, such as GiveawayBot, can help ensure that winners are chosen randomly and fairly.

Lastly, any giveaways that seem suspicious or dishonest should be reported to server moderators or Discord support to help prevent further abuse.

We want Discord to be a safe platform for everyone. But a blog about Discord can't be a good blog without its own server. In this server, you can help to get news on the server, make sure that the news is spread around to other server and even help us built a safe community to everyone.

We always post 2 to 4 blog posts weekly, giving you a report of a raid that happened, new info about a past raid, analysing changes happening around Discord, addressing the problem Discord has or causes (if there are) and much more imaginable.

If you have any info for us or would like to contribute on a post, send it to us in the Platform Journey Discord Server. The more info you have, the better we can inform everyone or even do a slight investigation behind it.
